Screening plays a vital role in the municipal and industrial wastewater treatment process. Proper screening protects wastewater treatment equipment and improves operations. Typically, the screen is the first device used at wastewater treatment plants and is designed to remove any large objects and prevent damage and clogging of downstream equipment, piping, and appurtenances. The Kuhn KSR Step Screen is a robust stainless steel screen that is predominantly used in the preliminary treatment of municipal and industrial waste. The screen comprises both movable and fixed lamella ‘steps’.
In normal operation the lamellas remain stationary. Solid matter is caught by the step-like screening surface forming a mat which is responsible for the main filtration. Once a difference in water level is identified across the screen then the moving lamellas elevate the screenings mat up one or two steps before stopping once again, releasing the flow through the screen and reducing the level once again. The screen stepping stops and again the system awaits for a level rise to repeat its cleaning process.
Sound control of a step screen can yield improved results for screenings capture. The screenings mat greatly assists in the capture of smaller aperture screenings in relation to the selected lamella gap width.
